What is complementary and alternative medicine?

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) define complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) as the collective term for "medical products and practices that are not part of standard care." Standard care is what practiced by medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy, and allied health professionals, such as nurses and physical therapists.

Complementary & alternative medicine includes the practices of:

  • acupuncture
  • ayurveda
  • chiropractic
  • energy therapies
  • herbal medicine
  • homeopathy
  • hypnotherapy
  • massage therapy
  • naturopathy
  • nutritional supplements & vitamin therapy
  • trigger point therapy
  • yoga

While chiropractic is considered a part of CAM, resources in this guide will be focusing on other aspects of alternative medicine.
